Hi Martin – You don’t need to include the post-id with WordPress. WordPress is smart enough to add a number to the permalink if you use the exact same post title more than once. And adding the post-id actually takes away from how easy a post url is to understand and most likely to remember.

Also, as for the html thing…some people recommend that, but I think its just added text that people sometimes have to type in, and to me, its strange to have .html on the end of what is really a PHP file. That’s the developer in me I guess…

Excellent post… I know I’m getting to this a bit late, but just wanted to echo a few of the sentiments above – some really good tips here regarding starting a blog network.

One quick point regarding #22, I use almost the exact same permalink structure as you suggest, although I add the post id to the end (mine looks like: /%category%/%postname%-%post_id%.html)

The reason for adding the post id is to guarantee that each post will have a unique permalink… if you just used category/postname then if you had a regular post that had the same title from week to week you’ll run into problems if you forget to change the post slug when you post… as for adding .html to the end, I don’t know whether that does anything from an SEO point of view, but I just like it to look like a proper url to readers and not an obvious rewritten url
