Picture is definitely important, equally or not more so than the power and purpose (because picture can also embody personality) - I'm a proponent for face shots and think it's fascinating that the social web has become more "human" over recent years - moving from IDs and cartoon avatars to real names and photos.

I also think bloggers need to move more toward video interaction with their readers - this may scare a lot of folk as it's not so quick and simple to edit, re-edit and edit again in order to get the presentation precisely as you want it, particularly in one take. However, it can really mean that personality shines through.

There would be little to confuse Chris Garrett, Chris Garrett and Chris Garrett if they all did video blogs instead of written ones!

So perhaps we could change Picture into Portrayal, dramatically representing the person with speech and action and gesture, and include video as a more natural option within that - a great video introduction that includes all the other P's would be killer.

I'm totally with you. Especially if you write a "serious" blog, not to say a watch-blog, your readers want to know who gives the information.

On our blog, where we mix serious content with soft-news, the about page is the second most visited page after the homepage.

I am always trying to improve my "About" page, I think a picture is highly important, despite the fact that I do not have one, I have been planning on putting one up soon nevertheless. It is definitely an important part of branding, because I associate John Chow, Darren Rowse and Yaro to their pictures, so it is immensely powerful.

The fact that it could get you a job or lose you a job is also incredibly valid.

Thank you for the post,

Fabien

Hi David

Found your excellent post through dear Liz - via Essential Tools. We - my friend Lesley and I - have set up blogging workshops, the first one was a big success and we're, of course, always looking for info and materials that can help out neo-bloggers getting off to a great start with their blogs.

Sure you won't mind we place short review and link to this post from our blog-studio blog?
