@Ben Bleikamp - We live and learn. Just like in every profession, there are mistakes we make during the first times we experiment with something new.

I'm glad you enjoyed the critique and could take some of it's aspects into consideration, and I hope that you and Darren manage to reach a solution that will appeal to most of your visitors.

@Money Diet - Darren wasn't the designer for the site in question. If they decide to change anything in their website, due to this article's influence, that is between the designer and himself.

This isn't a tabloid story. It's just an article of a professional giving another some advice.

Thanks for the critique - I have never thought the design was perfect, and this site was my first experience working on a site that has so much content.

One thing I notice is that people are comparing the front page of the new Problogger.net with the old front page - they're completely different. If you want to compare the old front page with something you need to compare it with problogger.net/blog.

The front page is designed to be a broad overview of all the content on Darren's site - you'll see why this was necessary in the coming months, I'm sure.

In terms of font size, you could increase the font size on Problogger without breaking the design if you can't read it. The main content - the articles - have a larger font than many main stream news sites or blogs.

Also, the 6 125x125 ads had to be worked in above the fold, which limited my ability to use two columns on the front page, etc.

I found this post interesting and not overly critical. Critiquing a major player, even constructively, is brave, and hopefully even major players will be able to accept feedback and learn. His commenting why he did what he did would be even more informative, i.e. a dialogue.
Thanks.

I'm sorry, but ProBlogger's design isn't being singled out, it was examined. As I said, and I quote, ProBlogger isn't the only website with typography problems:

"we need to find ways to differentiate ourselves from the rest of the blogs out there. Most of those blogs suffer from typography problems"

I think you're being a bit harsh. It seems to have the same size font as every other site I visit - including most online news sites, the BBC, The Age. Why single out Problogger when most of the internet uses the same font size? If you want larger fonts you can adjust it in your browser settings. If you are using mobile devices you can use the mobile feeds.

I agree that the move of the banner menus to the bottom of the page is a shame - I liked that about the old design. I like the three columns for the home page (the blog entries have a simpler two column design) as there is a lot of content to show and I doubt it could be done in two columns.
