You can use wp-cache to accelerate the loading and minimize the resources usage. Some bad plugin will eat up a lot of resources, I once need to increase my php memory limit up to 128 MB!

Hopefully automattic will optimize their system or at least provide some guide or ebooks for all users.

Agree. I have a pile of WP blogs, but after a few months, I still do not know for sure If my server could do with some optimization. No checklist available, no guides, not even any clarity on exactly how the cache plugins should work. 50 % of the time they don't till you fiddle with them and edit them. The lines which should get added to the .htaccess don't get added, or they get added in the wrong place. Caching in my opinion should have been built into WP as a one-click option.

I have to say that you are correct that the lack of information to setup WordPress to handle more web traffic, is something which should be addressed. While there is plenty of information from third parties out there, I have a very hard time to understand what they are talking about. It appears to me, that you either have to be a Linux geek or have to hire one to get this type of job done.
