My usual policy for Twitter follows is if they follow me, I'll look over their last couple of pages of tweets and if I think they're worth following I will.

Nice and easy. ;-)

I don't understand reciprocal following or the need for a fake follow. Maybe I'm just too low profile, but is it really that hard to follow only those you want to follow and say no to the rest? My spare time is precious and I don't understand how guilt or fear of upsetting people you don't even know is supposed to override my desire to spend my free time following people I actually want to follow.

Having said that, I think there's a threshold of probably between 100-500 where you can follow interesting people and people you know and still have a pretty good idea of what's going on in the lives of those people. More than that and I suspect it's just a lot of noise with the occasional piece of serendipity. Your mileage may vary of course :)

Tweetdeck does look good. I've just installed it and it looks to solve many of the problems which I talked about . By the sound of it Twitter will be adding something similar to the main Twitter website. It will be interesting to see what they do in the next month or so.

This is one of the reasons I like Tweetdeck. I can group my followers into buckets and follow conversations a little easier, as well as choose which conversations/groups I'm interested in at that particular moment.
TweetDeck still has a ways to go - but it's one of the best Twitter Apps I've seen so far.

Great post about your new experiences with twitter and integrating, as well as keeping it, a valuable and not overwhelmingly useless tool.

I'm pretty picky, I usually look at their following to follower ratio and there past tweets to decide. That said I follow a bunch of people that I wouldn't consider must follow people. To split the two I've used Twitters Device option, basically I only receive the updates for people I really want to follow to IM and SMS.

Works for me but I'd like to be able to group people and have an easy way to switch on and off notification settings. Aside from that I think TweetDeck is about the best option to handle groups right now.
