Rankings Rising: December 2007

Ending 2007 on an up-note was very difficult as the holiday season usually means a huge decrease in traffic for sites like this one, but I was able to find ways to deal with it, and thanks to some carefully planned articles, and the support of my friends and readers, December turned out to be one of my most successful months thus far in rankings, though not so much in revenue.

Alexa Traffic Rank (lower is better)
January 5th – 62,564
December 3rd – 73,611

Technorati Rank (lower is better)
January 5th – 12,978
December 3rd – 18,862

Feedburner RSS Subscribers
January 5th – 283
December 3rd – 221

Unique Visitors
December – 23866
November – 13923

Revenue
December – $140
November – $180

Some of the top stories in December were:

With a new year upon us, I am very hopeful for the future. I have been getting some interesting contacts behind the scenes, and have been thinking a lot about my continued strategy with this blog. I hope to continue to teach from my experiences as a blogger, as well as reporting what is going on in the industry. I have a feeling that blogging is going to change a lot over 2008, and my work here might help others from making any missteps.

To all my readers, a huge thank you from me, and I hope you keep checking back with me. Without you, this site would just be a little spot I rant in, rather than a great location on the web with an amazing group of people.

100,000 Words Posted Here

So over the course of this site’s life, there has already been over one hundred thousand words posted here. That includes four guest posts since the site began, the rest, are all mine.

Where did I find this information?

Well, a friend of mine Joost de Valk, no relation to the online television service, has released an amazing WordPress plugin called Blog Metrics.

Based on ideas in an excellent post by Avinash Kaushik this plugin calculates the following:

  • Raw Author Contribution:
    • average number of posts per month
    • average number of words per post
  • Conversation Rate:
    • average number of comments per post without your own comments
    • average number of words used in comments to posts

Both for all the time you’ve been blogging, and for the last month, it then adds these values in a page on your WordPress dashboard.

The script also let me know that I have posted 47 posts in the last thirty days, and that I average around 64 posts a month. A very cool script that I suggest everyone go out and get, especially if you have a multi-author blog.

Wish me luck on my next 100,000 words.

December Traffic Details: Getting Off On The Wrong Foot

So as the month ticked over to December, the traffic here took a strong nose dive. I was getting around half the normal traffic during the first three days of the month, and it made me break a sweat. Had I done something wrong? Was it just that everyone was slowing down for Winter? I didn’t know the reason behind the dip, but I didn’t like it.

I vowed to fight the drop as it was quickly effecting all of my rankings online.

I started plotting, scheming and trying to come up with ideas on how to build the traffic back up. Frustratingly, work, life, and other factors made it quite difficult to give this site the attention it sorely needed.

After promoting a few articles the best I could, traffic started to pick up, but is still much lower than October or November.

I have many ideas on how to work at combatting this issue, but as a blogger, I completely understand that the majority of the public is suffering from the effects of an early sun set. I have even been confused at what time it was, as the sun sets earlier and earlier saying to my wife that it felt like ten at night at six in the evening. This Canadian will keep on trying to publish amazing content that draws you in, but don’t be surprised if I head off to bed fairly early.

Over 200 Feed Readers

Around two weeks ago I had 183 RSS feed readers according to Feedburner, and I am proud to say that I have finally hit another milestone on this blog, and have over 200 RSS feed readers according to Feedburner. I want to take a quick second to thank everyone that has subscribed. I plan on putting up some amazing articles before this month is out, and I hope you will stick with me.

For all of you that have not subscribed yet, click on the big orange RSS logo over to the right, and get subscribed. If you don’t know what RSS is, or how to subscribe, I recommend filling out your e-mail in the form at the bottom of the right hand sidebar, and clicking subscribe. This will allow Feedburner to send you updates on this blog to your e-mail.

And just to make it clear: I will never distribute or sell any personal information that you submit to this site.
